What is Brief Strategic Therapy

Brief strategic therapy is an innovative approach to solving human problems. It is grounded on specific theoretical basis and its operative procedures are constantly evolving and being updated due to the ongoing empirical research.

It's a brief approach (less then 20 sessions) which, on one side, it eliminates symptoms and behaviours which provoke suffering, and on the other side produces a change in the ways the person builds and relates to it's personal and interpersonal reality.

Differently from traditional psychological and psychiatric therapies, a strategic therapist doesn't refer to any definition of psychological "normality" or "pathology", preferring to use concepts like "functionality" or "dysfunctionality".

Thus, from a strategic perspective, in order to change a problematic situation it's not necessary to investigate and reveal past causes (something which belonging to the past is not changeable) but it's more effective to work on how the problem functions at present and on finding the most efficacious strategies to provoke a permanent change.

The strategic intervention, in order to achieve its results in the most rapid and efficient way, is an active form of therapy which needs to produce results starting from the first sessions. Once the first changes are triggered the therapy will continue towards it's ultimate goal of having the individual acquire an autonomy and personal abilities that allow him to face and solve future problems.

Strategic Problem Solving

The same type of strategic logic - working on concreate and defined objectives through strategies devised on the problem - can be applied to all human situations where there's the need to introduce a change.

Strategic problem solving produces effective results in all those contexts - work, organizational, educational, etc. - where there's the need to improve what already works or change what is starting to provoke discomfort.

Even in these situations the strategic consultant uses techniques and stratagems that are capable of unblocking the impasse situation and capable of reorganizing the system following more useful and functional rules.
